A man who pleaded guilty to stabbing an instructor and two female students during a 2023 Gender Studies class at the University of Waterloo will return to a courtroom in Kitchener, Ont., on Monday to begin his sentencing hearing.

In June this year, Geovanny Villalba-Aleman pleaded guilty to:

  • Two counts of aggravated assault.
  • One count of assault occasioning bodily harm.
  • One count of aggravated assault.

Two students and an instructor were stabbed in Hagey Hall on June 28, 2023. Police called it a “hate-motivated, gender expression and gender identity incident.”

A third student was also nearly stabbed while trying to escape. There were about 40 students in the class at that time.

Video footage presented in court showed Villalba-Aleman initially telling police he was the victim of a stabbing, then confessing to being the perpetrator and asking to be handcuffed.

“You know something… actually… please put me in handcuffs because it was me,” he says in the police bodycam footage. He was then handcuffed and showed the officers where he could find a kitchen knife in his backpack.

The sentencing hearing is scheduled to take place within five days. The judge is expected to hear victim impact statements and sentencing submissions from both the Crown and defense.
