The Clarks hitmaker was released from prison on July 31, 2024, after serving 13 years behind bars.
The court ruled against Kartel’s retrial for the murder of Clive Williams, whose remains were never found.

In its ruling, the court said there was sufficient evidence to suggest Kartel would not be able to complete a potentially longer sentence if a retrial were to take place, citing his deteriorating health.
Kartel was arrested in 2011, before his 2014 conviction, but he appealed the ruling. Kartel, Shawn Campbell, Kahira Jones and Andre St. John were released shortly afterwards.
On Thursday, November 7, Kartel posted a video of himself lounging on a couch with Popcaan. The images brought nostalgia to dancehall fans when Kartel discovered Popcaan in 2007.
He recruited him for his music group Portmore Empire and mentored him. In addition to showing him the tricks of the trade, Kartel took him to big shows like Sting and Reggae Sumfest.
In the video, Kartle unwraps a gift brought to him by Popcaan. He showed off a beautiful Rolex watch, which he proudly showed to the camera.
‘Gift from Papi… aka Papi Presents. Family1st. God is the greatest,” Kartel wrote.

What disease does Vybz Kartel have?
The musician’s lawyer previously said that the inhumane conditions in the prison put Kartel’s life in danger.
His lawyer Isat Buchanan said Kartel was kept in a cell with no water, no air circulation and a bucket for a toilet, causing his health to deteriorate.
Buchanan noticed that Kartel’s neck was swollen. According to a medical report, Kartel has a thyroid condition known as Graves’ disease. He also has two heart conditions and complications, with his private doctor recommending surgery.
