Runcorn and Helsby MP will appear at the magistrates court at a later date

MP Mike Amesbury is due to appear in court on assault charges. Amesbury, from Frodsham, Cheshire, has been summoned to court to face charges of section 39 assault.
The 55-year-old will appear in court at a later date. The charge relates to reports of an attack on a 45-year-old man in Main Street, Frodsham, which was reported to police at 2.48am on Saturday, October 26.
The MP represents Runcorn and Helsby in Parliament and so it was suspended by the Labor Party amid ongoing investigations into the incident. Police previously confirmed that a 55-year-old man had been voluntarily interviewed under an abundance of caution in connection with the alleged incident.

The Labor Party confirmed on Sunday evening that the MP had been suspended “pending an investigation” into the incident. A Labor spokesperson said: “Mike Amesbury MP has been assisting Cheshire Police with their investigation following an incident on Friday evening.
“As these investigations are now underway, the Labor Party has administratively suspended Mr Amesbury’s membership of the Labor Party pending an investigation.”
Previously published CCTV footage captured two men facing off before the man, said to be Amesbury, punched the other and then continued to knock him to the ground. What happened in the preceding moments is not clear from the video.
It comes after several images were posted on social media on Saturday It appeared that the MP was shouting and pointing his finger to a man lying on the street. He seemed to say, ‘You’ll never threaten me again, will you? You’ll never threaten me again, will you.”
Amesbury said on Saturday he would “cooperate with any queries” but was “committed to remaining an open and accessible MP for our community” after initial images circulated online. He said in a statement: “Last night I was involved in an incident which occurred after I felt threatened in the street after a night out with friends.
“This morning I personally contacted Cheshire Police to report what happened during the incident. I will make no further public comment but will of course co-operate with any investigations if required by Cheshire Police.”
