New Delhi, Nov 7 (PTI) The Congress on Thursday lashed out at BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis over his comments on Rahul Gandhi with a ‘red cover’ copy of the Constitution, alleging that the Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister is insulting the constitution maker and son of the state BR Ambedkar who the people will not tolerate.
The Congress also said that Fadnavis “objects” to the very same Constitution that the RSS attacked in 1949 for not being inspired by Manusmriti.
The Congress’ comment came a day after Fadnavis asked what message Rahul Gandhi wanted to give by showing a red copy of the Constitution of India. Fadnavis also accused the Congress leader of building a coalition of anarchists.

Targeting Fadnavis, Rahul Gandhi, in a post on
“This thinking of the BJP is an insult to the constitution maker, Maharashtra’s son Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar,” he said.
“During the Lok Sabha elections, the people of Maharashtra fought for the Constitution and gave a big victory to the Maha Vikas Aghadi.
“The people of Maharashtra will not tolerate any insult to Babasaheb by the BJP and along with the Congress and the Maha Vikas Aghadi, they will defend our Constitution by responding with full force to any attack on it.
“And all such shameful attempts by the BJP will fail – if you put it in writing, a caste census will take place,” Gandhi said using the hashtag #SamvidhanVirodhiBhajpa (anti-Constitution BJP).
Congress General Secretary (in charge of communications) Jairam Ramesh said, “Devendra Fadnavis is getting desperate. He accuses Rahul Gandhi of displaying a ‘red book’ to seek support from so-called ‘urban naxals’.
“This book that Mr. Fadnavis objects to is the Constitution of India, the chief architect of which was Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. This is the very same Constitution of India that the RSS had attacked in November 1949 for not being inspired by Manusmriti,” Ramesh said in a post on X.
“It is the very same Constitution of India that the non-biological Prime Minister wants to replace,” the Congress leader said.
As for the “red book,” Fadnavis should know that it contains a foreword by one of India’s foremost legal personalities, KK Venugopal, who served as attorney general of India between 2017 and 2022, Ramesh said.
“Earlier, the non-biological deity and the self-styled Chanakya were also given the Red Book. On ‘urban naxals’, the Union Home Ministry told Parliament on February 9, 2022 and March 11, 2020 that the Government of India does not use the term!” he said.
“Mr. Fadnavis should first think and then speak,” Ramesh added.
The Congress leader also posted pictures of Modi and Shah receiving the same copy of the Constitution that Gandhi carried.
Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday campaigned for the opposition Congress-NCP(SP)-Shiv Sena (UBT) alliance in the state where assembly elections will be held on November 20.
