Marion man facing multiple animal neglect charges after rescuing 11 animals from filthy conditions

MARION, Iowa (KCRG) – A man faces charges after police say eleven animals were rescued from filthy conditions at his Marion home.

Marion police said they were called on September 16 to the home of John Wheeler in the 200 block of 5th Avenue.

There were seven cats and four dogs living there with Wheeler.

The house was found to be covered in feces and urine and was therefore deemed unsafe for people and animals to stay in.

The Cedar Valley Humane Society examined the animals and found four dogs injured. Two of them were emaciated and had scabs on their bodies. Police said the other two dogs had skin problems, including scabs and lesions.

Seven cats had fleas and were also in an unhealthy condition.

John Wheeler is charged with four counts of animal neglect resulting in injury and seven counts of animal neglect resulting in injury.
