Longtime Vail Middle School student identified as victim in fatal train crash

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – The person killed in a pedestrian train crash near Colossal Cave Road on Friday, Nov. 1 has been identified as an Old Vail Middle School student.

The Vail School District confirmed that an eighth-grade student was killed and said the district is offering support and resources to the student’s classmates.

“It is with a very heavy heart that I write to inform you of a recent loss to our Old Vail community,” OVMS Director Julia Kaiser wrote in a letter to parents. “On Friday afternoon, one of our eighth-grade students passed away. Please join us in offering your thoughts and prayers to her family as they cope with this devastating loss.”

Union Pacific confirmed one person was killed and said train crews were not injured. Union Pacific said the person was not at an intersection when he was struck and the incident is under investigation.

Kaiser said counselors, therapy dogs and outside support would be available at the library starting Monday.

This was at least the fifth train accident in the Tucson area this year.
