The supermodel talked about her passion for sustainability at the Earthshot Prize Awards on November 6

Heidi Klum doesn’t mind sharing a closet with her daughter.
At the fourth annual Earthshot Awards Ceremonies on Wednesday, November 6, the supermodel, 51, said she was “proud” of it 20-year-old Leni gives new life to pieces from her iconic wardrobe.
“I get so excited when I see my daughters wearing my clothes again,” Heidi tells PEOPLE at the event in Cape Town, South Africa. “My eldest daughter, she is also a model, and she goes to events and when she wears clothes my clothes, not only do I feel proud, but we can also upcycle.”
In 2022, Leni borrowed her mother’s silky black strapless dress from the ’90s for her prom.
“Prom night in mommy’s dress ,” the teen captioned an Instagram carousel ahead of the event. Heidi originally wore the dress in 1998 for a Comic Relief live comedy event and posted a heart eyes emoji on her daughter’s post.
“I pass down clothes to my kids,” Heidi shared on the Earthshot green carpet.
“…I think it’s also so important to keep wearing your stuff. I think we used to wear something once and then never wear it again, and that’s such a wrong thing to do,” she added. “I urge everyone to wear the great things you have in your closet. It’s the best store, your own closet.”

The Earthshot Prize Awards are hosted by Prince William and recognize five winners each year for their contributions to environmental awareness. On the carpet, Heidi wore a bright orange vintage Halston one-shoulder dress.

“I go to a lot of events, but this is probably one of the most important events I’ve been to,” Heidi said of the evening. “I have to be honest, I had never heard of it. It’s amazing what Prince William has done. I haven’t met him yet. I didn’t know I was on his radar and when his team called and asked if I could come, I immediately said yes.”
The America has talent The judge says that after delving “deeper” into environmental issues, she “learned so many new things.”

“Who knew sustainable fishing existed?” she says. “Tomorrow I’m so honored to go to this place with Prince William to learn more about sustainable fishing. I knew our waters are overfished, polluted and all these terrible things. But I didn’t know anything about sustainable fishing. great that I’m learning more things and hopefully getting better in the future.”

Her children make the future so important to her, Heidi explains. “I have four children and hopefully one day I will be a grandmother and what about my grandchildren? We have to think about our future,” she says.
She adds, “When I was a kid, you knew it was starting and people were going to say there’s no climate change. I mean, open your eyes around you – it’s happening everywhere. There’s so many places I’ve been where they’re complaining about these things and flooding and everything that’s going on. Everyone needs to open their eyes and now that I am here, my eyes are even more open.”
