‘People feed off my emotions in a positive way’

CINCINNATI— Joe Burrow was clear frustrated during the Bengals’ 41-24 victory over the Raiders.

He voiced his opinions on the sidelines and didn’t shy away from making his feelings known during his post-match press conference.

‘Maybe my behavior could be a little better sometimes’ Burrow said, smiling on Tuesday afternoon.

Burrow is playing as well as any quarterback in the NFL. He has completed 70.2% of his passes for 2,242 yards, 20 touchdowns and just four interceptions. Despite his stellar play, the Bengals started the season 1-4.

Burrow called their game against the Raiders a “must-win”, then went out and completed his first 15 passes, tied a career-high with five touchdown passes and was still angry after the game.

“Maybe I couldn’t have shown my emotions as much, but it’s also something I’ve tried to do more,” Burrow said. “I know people in the locker room wanted me to do a little more, whether it was good or bad, but that’s not possible. At least I don’t think I can show my emotions in a positive way. And when things happen things are not going well, don’t let that become known.”

Tom Brady played with that emotion, especially as he established himself as one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks. Peyton Manning played with that fire and drive.

Neither of them shy away from yelling at their teammates or expressing their displeasure when something goes wrong.

“That’s the standard he has, the standard he set for the team,” said Ja’Marr Chase. “He hasn’t achieved his achievements and the level of greatness he wants to achieve yet, so he holds himself to those standards.

“He always has been. He’s always been the type of guy who holds himself to a standard. He’s just doing it more vocally now.”

Burrow is definitely louder and he seems comfortable in that role, but that doesn’t mean he’ll have a short fuse every week.

“It’s a give and take. I know people feed off my emotions in a positive way,” Burrow said. “It’s hard for me, as a quarterback I think I play my best when I’m like that (even tempered). I’m not up and down and angry and then happy and all that. I play my best when I’m like that.” “I’m even going to pick my spots where I need to say something, positive or negative, while also finding a balance between what I need to do to go out there and play great.”

Burrow is certainly playing great. The Bengals need that to keep going if they want a chance to upset the Ravens on Thursday Night Football.
