What the jockeys said: 2024 Big Dance

A positive drive early paved the way Gringotts to record the biggest win of his career in the $3 million Big Dance (1600m) at Randwick on Tuesday.

The win was Gringotts’ eighth from 15 starts and took his earnings to more than $2.4 million.

Gringotts is a five-year-old gelding by Per Incanto (USA), he was ridden by Tommy Berry and is trained by Ciaron Maher.

This is what the riders thought of their horse’s performance in the Big Dance.

1st – GRINGOTTS (Tommy Berry) I hate being so far out front so I was too busy trying to get him home and we were talking about how many seconds I’ve had in big races over the last twelve months so I just held my nerve and got him just get the job done and it’s nice. But yes, it’s a nice feeling again.

2nd – VIVY AIR (Andrew Adkins) She was excellent. That’s about all I have. She was great. Delivered on time and very heavy.

3rd – SUPARAZI (Tim Clark) He was brilliantly prepared and ran accordingly.

4th – TAVI TIME (Chad Schofield) We had a perfect run after our draw. Very well traveled. Honestly continue on the straight and narrow.

5th – DUCASSE (Regan Bayliss) We couldn’t have asked for a better flight from the barrier we faced. The winner will follow one by one. A tough, persistent effort.

6th – ROODSTEENPUT (Tom Sherry) Very proud of him. He raced well. Was still strong on the line. He didn’t have the change of pace like the winner. He was brave in defeat.

7th – DETONATOR JACKET (Jason Collett) I didn’t travel as well as I would have liked. Could hold on.

8th – CELESTIAL LAB (Ashley Morgan) He ran great. He’s an old warhorse. Kept finding the line. It’s just hard for us to gain ground.

9th – RUN OVER (Jay Ford) She ran a good race. Probably a kilometer is just a bit too far for her.

10th – HERE TO SHOCK (Nash Railler) Obviously things didn’t go so well today. Was a little annoyed when I stopped and took the saddle from him. I just thought maybe there was something underlying going on.

11th – CRANKY HARRY (Jake Bayliss) He’ll probably just barely make it to the mile mark. That kind of pace just destroyed him from the 1000 meters onwards. He still boxed well.

12th – FLOATING (Zac Wadick (A)) He did very well. Very well sealed. Too far back.

13th – GREEN SHADOWS (Alysha Collett) Very hard effort from him.

14th – HEZASHOCKA (Dylan Gibbons) Well traveled. We hoped he would sprint fresh, but he is just a real keeper.

15th – LION ROAR (Joshua Parr) Had trouble getting into the race.

16th – MONEY FROM HEAVEN (Reece Jones) Think he just reached the end. Raced completely disinterested.

17th – PRINCE OF HELENA (Jake Duffy) Never ready.

18th – SNEAK PREVIEW (Mathew Cahill) He crashed.

19th – TIME QUEST (Christian Reit) Disappointing today.

Last – ZOUATICA (Molly Bourke (A)) I just had to make it a bit difficult from that fence. The candle probably burned out too early.
