Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye made no excuses for the interception he threw on the final play Sunday’s defeat to the Titans.
The starting quarterback wouldn’t do that blame the wind or wide receiver Kendrick Bourne falling down, bringing safety Amani Hooker, who eventually intercepted the pass, to Boutte’s side of the field.
“I think, KB (Bourne), it’s hard to predict that. Maybe it could have kept the safety a bit more. But I think I still – I think my answer from the wind, what I said last night, was a bit of a reaction. I don’t think wind – at the quarterback, and I don’t think it played that big of a role. So really, I think I just set it too low,” Maye said on the “WEEI Afternoon Show.” “I have to get it out there more for Boutte and let him make a play. So basically I think this is my decision making. And maybe sometimes you throw it away, throw it out there. Or, if not, the other 40 can try to throw into the end zone and perhaps try to catch Boutte over the shoulder. I don’t think the wind has become that big of a problem. I think it was more my reaction to the match, to make myself feel better.”
Maye also believes he could have ended his viral 11.8 seconds of play to send the match into extra time sooner.
“I think I missed Hunter (Henry) Pry in the back zone on the end line in the first two seconds,” Maye said. “I think I could have finished that game a lot faster.”
Maye was one of the few bright spots in Sunday’s loss as the Patriots’ only offense. He passed and rushed for a combined 301 yards. The Patriots only had 295 total net yards in the game, which accounts for the loss of yards due to penalties.
