Gang Starr returns with confident new single ‘Finishem’

The song celebrates the fifth anniversary of the hip-hop duo’s LP, One of the best so far

Gang Starr has released a new single, “Finishem.” The song contains vocal lines recorded by MC Guruone half of the duo alongside DJ Prime Ministerbefore his death in 2010.

The song is released on the fifth anniversary of Gang Starr’s LP, One of the best so farwhich in 2019 marked the group’s first new music in 16 years.

“Like One of the best so far As the five-year anniversary approached, that milestone prompted me to create a new song to match the occasion,” DJ Premier said in a statement. “The album is special on so many levels; What it meant to me, Guru’s family and the fans warranted something new to honor the occasion. I started looking through files, looking for something that stood out and fit; and as soon as I heard Guru’s hook, “Now I’m about to finish them off, only my rep can reduce them,” I knew this was it and I went to work coming up with a beat for it.

He continued: “I had some unused Antman Wonder files that I decided to try out, and one of the sounds emotionally touched me from the very first note. I knew this was the one that would shape the song. The fans always appreciate Gang Starr more, and this one is for them.”

When One of the best so far dropped, DJ Premier told Rolling stone which Guru was constantly recording, thus creating the LP after his death. “It was always known that he was constantly recording,” DJ Premier said. “So that made me start saying, ‘Man, I know there must be a lot of unreleased stuff out there.’”

He added: “All the posthumous projects that people have released have been well saved. I didn’t want it to sound like a rescued album; I wanted it to sound like a brand new album. I didn’t want it to sound like I’m just fighting to save these vocals just because there’s nothing else I can work with.
