Chaves County Sheriff Mike Herrington said he had to climb onto the roof of the car as rising floodwaters trapped the vehicle and several other people, submerging them up to the windows.
According to the BBC’s American partner, CBS, 309 people were rescued in the flash floods and at least two people died. The Chaves County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Herrington was rescued and was uninjured.
