According to the St. Fire Department Paul, a man was rescued from a third-story window after a fire in an apartment building on Monday morning.

Crews were called to an apartment building in the 1100 block of 4th Street East around 8 a.m.

Authorities say the fire was caused by an electric bicycle that caught fire in the building’s hallway. The fire was extinguished in the hallway, but thick smoke remained throughout the third floor.

Deputy fire chief of St. Paul Jamie Smith told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS the entire third floor of the building was moved – about six units. The Red Cross was called to help the displaced residents.

There was also a man on the third floor who had one leg hanging out the window and was unable to escape down the hall, Smith added. The crew of the St. Fire Department Paweł saved him using a ground ladder.

Firefighters helped two other people get out of the building.

The man was examined for smoke inhalation. He was also taken to hospital as a precaution, although the fire brigade says he suffered no visible injuries.
