The former owner of a now-closed South End grocery store admitted stabbing a person with a screwdriver.

On Thursday in Albany County Superior Court, Travon T. Jackson pleaded guilty to second-degree assault. Jackson was arrested after he entered a Bassett Street residence last Christmas and stabbed a person in the back of the head and ear. The victim suffered minor cuts, pain and difficulty hearing in his ear.

Special prosecutor Danielle Neroni said Jackson will receive a suspended sentence when he is sentenced on December 17.

The victims are happy with this resolution. A protection order was also introduced.

The South End grocery store opened in December 2022 in the former McDonald’s. It is located in an area considered a “food desert”. It closed in July 2023 after a fire extinguisher caught fire in a food preparation area and never reopened.

Albany County purchased the property for $450,000.
